Suspected DUI Driver Identified in Highway 9 Crash That Killed Two

Frisco, CO — The suspect involved in a fatal crash on Colorado Highway 9 that killed two Summit County residents last week has been identified as 31-year-old Lindsey Leigh Ward, according to the Fifth Judicial District Attorney’s Office. On the evening of Friday, Aug 30, Benjamin Mitton, 41 and his girlfriend Nichole Gough were killed after Ward’s vehicle veered into the wrong lane, colliding head-on with their Jeep and causing it to roll.  Mitton and Gough were ejected from the vehicle in the rollover and died from their injuries.  According to an affidavit, multiple witnesses stated they saw a white Subaru, Ward’s vehicle, driving southbound before losing control and hitting the other car heading northbound. Ward’s vehicle continued a little further south before going down a steep embankment. Ward was taken to St. Anthony Summit Medical Center for treatment. At the hospital, troopers attempted to run Ward through voluntary roadside maneuvers but reported that she struggled to follow instructions, was unstable on her feet and needed to hold her arms out to avoid falling over.  Ward was later booked into the Summit County Jail on two counts of vehicular homicide, driving under the influence and a lane usage violation. She was released on bond Tuesday, according to District Attorney Bruce Brown.   Laurie Richardson, Mitton’s aunt, remembered Ben on Monday as kind, caring and independent. “Ben was a very kind soul, always in a good mood,” Richardson said. “He was happy. He was friendly.” “His most favorite thing to do was to go to the mountains and be in the mountains,” Richardson said. “Four-wheeling, going to the mountains, going camping, spending time outdoors in the mountains — those were his favorite things to do.” After Mitton and his wife split, he had been dating Gough for the past year or so, Richardson said.    “We really liked her. We thought Ben was very fortunate because she was a wonderful young lady,” Richardson said. Mitton leaves behind a son from a previous marriage and a one-year-old grandson.  Gough had three children of her own, ranging in age from teens to young adults. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help with funeral costs. Source: KDVR Our deepest condolences go out to all of those impacted by this incident.
