Denver, CO — The at-fault driver in an accident that killed an Uber driver and his passenger following the June 8th 2019 Garth Brooks concert in Denver is facing added counts of vehicular homicide after a second person has died from the crash.    The Uber driver, identified as Yasir Hasan, 33, was declared dead immediately following the crash.   His passenger, dentist Mark Karla, 45, of Commerce City, succumbed to his injuries and died July 1st of massive brain trauma, Denver Police said.  Karla had been hospitalized in critical condition since the June 9th crash.  Karla was a Commerce City dentist and the son-in-law of Colorado Springs mayor John Suthers.  Since Karla’s wife is Denver Deputy District Attorney Alison Suthers, the 18th Judicial District Attorney is serving as special prosecutor in the case.  However, based on where the crime occurred, the case will continue to be heard by a Denver judge in Denver court, said Denver District Court spokesperson Vikki Migoya.     The at-fault driver, Jeffrey Dean Sloan, 36, who appeared in court July 11th, is charged with two counts of vehicular homicide, two counts of first-degree assault, extreme indifference, two counts of leaving the scene of an accident and two counts of vehicular eluding.   The car Sloan was driving in was also reportedly stolen.   Sloan was speeding down East Colfax Avenue at about 1:00 a.m. on June 9th in a Jeep Liberty when he allegedly ran a red light and struck a Honda Insight driven by Hasan. Hasan and Karla were transported to Denver Health Medical Center, where Hasan was declared dead, the police statement said.  Karla was in critical condition after the crash.   “We are deeply saddened and our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragic incident,” said an Uber spokesperson.   According to police reports, Sloan exited the car after the crash and fled the scene on foot.  Police were able to identify and later apprehend Sloan based on personal ID and effects left in the car.   Sloan was arrested on June 10th.  He initially claimed his jacket, phone and ID had been stolen on Saturday, but later admitted being inside the vehicle, police said.  He denied driving at the time of the incident.   A second vehicular homicide charge was added last week after Karla’s death.   According to news reports, Karla had gone to the concert with a friend, and had called his wife around midnight to tell her that he was catching an Uber home.   Karla worked as a dentist at Commerce City Dental and was also an assistant clinical professor at UCHealth in Aurora.   We will update this post as more information becomes available.     Source: The Denver Post Our deepest condolences go out to all of those impacted by this incident.
