Two Mules Killed, Carriage Driver Ejected in CO Springs Crash

Colorado Springs, CO – The Colorado State Patrol is investigating a crash on Peyton Highway near Sweet Road Friday afternoon June 14th.  The area is north of Highway 24 in Colorado Springs.

According to the CSP, the driver of a pickup truck slammed into a mule-drawn buggy about 1:45 p.m. The driver of the buggy was airlifted to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Both mules were killed in the accident.

The accident occurred when a 2005 Ford F-150, driven by 18-year-old Isaac Hermes, of Elbert, was traveling northbound on Peyton Highway.

A carriage being pulled by two mules, operated by 52-year-old Kristin Ballotti, of Peyton, was also traveling northbound on Peyton Highway when the front of the pickup collided with the rear of the carriage.

During the crash, the operator of the carriage was ejected from the vehicle.  The driver of the Ford F-150 was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured.

Speed and inattentive driving are being considered factors in this crash.
