Suspect Arrested in Hit-and-Run Crash that Killed Uber Driver, Injured Colorado Springs Mayor’s Son


Denver, CO - A suspect has been arrested in connection with a crash that killed an Uber driver and seriously injured the son-in-law of Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers.

The incident occurred early in the morning on Sunday, June 9th at the intersection of East Colfax Avenue and Colorado Boulevard.

Jeffrey Sloan, 36, was driving a stolen Jeep around 1 a.m. when he ran a red light.

As he was crossing the intersection, he crashed into an Uber going roughly 80 miles per hour. The driver of the Uber, whose identity has not been released, died after being transported to the hospital.

Mark Karla, 45, the son-in-law of the mayor of Colorado Springs, was riding in the Uber at the time. A statement from the police said that he suffered “massive brain trauma” in the accident. He was taken to the Denver Health Medical Center where he remains in critical condition.

Sloan now faces charges of vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident involving death.
