Saturday Night Crash Near Kersey Kills 1, Injures 4
Kersey (March 6, 2019) - A winter storm may be to blame for the death of one man Saturday following a car accident east of Kersey in Weld County. This crash marks the 5th fatal accident in Weld County this year.
Platte Valley Fire responded to the call around 8:14 pm. It appears a vehicle traveling westbound on U.S 34 lost control between Weld County Roads 69 and 368. It then slid into the eastbound lanes and collided with an oncoming vehicle.
The driver who lost control died at the scene. EMS transported the four others from the eastbound vehicle to North Colorado Medical Center. Doctors treated one passenger for a fractured pelvis and the others for minor bruising. Names of the victims were not released and the vehicles were not yet identified.
Highway 34 closed following the accident an remained closed until around 11 pm. Investigators said all occupants of both cars were wearing seat belts. It is unknown if alcohol or drugs played a part in the accident. Platte Valley Fire Protection District spokeswoman Stephanie Cooke said a winter storm impacted driving conditions on Saturday and was likely a factor in the crash.
